March 7, the anniversary of the birthday of Luther Burbank, known as Conservation, Bird, and Arbor Day. As we welcome the beauty of spring, we take time to celebrate Conservation, Bird, and Arbor Day in California, a special day dedicated to protecting our environment, appreciating birds, and planting trees. This observance highlights the importance of conservation efforts and encourages us to be stewards of the natural world. In California, this day is especially meaningful as we honor Luther Burbank (1849–1926), a pioneering horticulturist whose work in plant breeding transformed agriculture and gardening. Known as the “Plant Wizard,” Burbank developed more than 800 new plant varieties, including fruits, flowers, grains, and vegetables that have benefited farmers and gardeners worldwide. His contributions to agriculture and sustainability continue to shape the way we grow and care for plants today. As we celebrate, we encourage students and families to take action—plant a tree, learn about local bird species, reduce waste, or visit a garden to appreciate the wonders of nature.
