Gem Painting is taking the crafting world by storm. It’s the perfect mixture of paint-by-numbers and mosaic art, without the paint! Instead, tiny gems make a beautiful pattern and sparkle in the light. Gem Painting is a recurring series that invites creative makers to gather together in the same place at the same time every week. If you are interested in participating, be sure to register for the series, attend the first date, and then drop in on the dates that work for your schedule so you can work on your masterpiece.  Participants are not required to attend every session, but we will only accept new participants every month. As this project aims to gather creative makers in the community, each participant's gem painting materials will be labeled and held at the library until the month is complete. Check the schedule below for when we will provide canvases to new participants and when we will only allow pre-existing participants to drop in. August 7 -- 11:00am-12:00pm -- Canvases available for new participants August 14 -- 11:00am-12:00pm -- Drop in for pre-existing participants August 21 -- 11:00am-12:00pm -- Drop in for pre-existing participants August 28 -- 11:00am-12:00pm -- Drop in for pre-existing participants This is a fun and relaxing activity that’s good for mental health and wellness. Do you have a reluctant reader? Sign your child up to have their own session to practice reading with a therapy dog at the library.  Studies show that children who may not want to read in front of their peers are much less anxious with an animal present. Children don't perceive animals to be judgmental and reading to an animal helps them become more confident readers. We’d like to thank our partners for making this possible: Pet Assisted Therapy teams and their handlers from the Peninsula Humane Society & the SPCA's Paws for Tales program. Registration is required and space is limited, so register early for your 10-minute slot at smcl.org/pawsfortales.
