Residents and return visitors recount fond memories of the thriving outdoor market on Saturday mornings in Kaunakakai. Vendors selling fruit, vegetables, art, jewelry, fabric creations, honey, baked goods and favorites like musubi, mochi and kulolo would attract hundreds to town. The market created an atmosphere of serendipity with homecomings, mini-reunions, and shared connections. Our weekly celebration of local products closed when the pandemic started. Changes to the property since then make it impractical for the market to return to the sidewalks of Ala Malama.Two nonprofits, the Molokai Arts Center (MAC) and the Molokai Community Health Center (MCHC), are collaborating to revive the Saturday Market in Kaunakakai. The MAC Saturday Market will be held in the large grassy field at MCHC where there is ample parking and access to restrooms. Vendors will be able to set up beginning at 8 am and the market will be open every Saturday from 9 am to noon. A market manager will coordinate booths for artists and sellers. Interested vendors (crafters, farmers, entrepreneurs) may join the market by contacting MAC volunteer Kim Markham (text 808-349-6270).The MAC Saturday Market at MCHC will open on Saturday, July 13, 2024.
