CPL is excited to announce this joint Bubbly Creek Tour (offered by Urban Rivers) and The Chicago River book discussion as part of our Summer at CPL for Adults program!  In 2022 Urban Rivers partnered with the Shedd Aquarium and the Chicago Park District to bring the first floating wetlands to Bubbly. For several weeks in late fall, hundreds of volunteers and community members turned out to help us assemble, bolt, fill, and plant the garden modules. Together they installed 3,000 square feet of gardens and planted over 3,000 native plants. The new archipelago of floating islands provide quality wetland habitat for wildlife, both above and below the water’s surface. The lush native greenery provides food and shelter for animals like insects and birds, and the roots grown down into the water provide refuge for all manner of aquatic species. The roots also filter and absorb pollutants from the water, directly improving the water quality around the islands. Learn about this amazing space during the Bubbly Creek tour! After the tour ends, we will take a short walk to Marz Community Brewing Company at 3630 S Iron St to discuss the tour in relation to the book The Chicago River: A Natural and Unnatural History by Libby Hill. Research biologist Austin Happel from the Shedd Aquarium will be there to lend his expertise about the work being done on the river.  Copies of The Chicago River will be available at Richard J Daley-Bridgeport branch at the beginning of July.  This event is for patrons ages 21+
