We have moved our community open studio to a fully accessible space, thanks to our partners, Waldo County YMCA! For two hours a week, adults of all abilities and skill level are warmly welcomed to this diner-inspired gathering place for creative exploration. Visit the “buffet” of art supplies and see what speaks to you. Peruse the “menu” of inspiration if you have no idea where to start! Try your hand at the “weekly special” – a low-pressure project led by your hostess. The atmosphere is relaxing and social, with coffee and tea available. Visitors are welcomed to play and explore, or to rekindle an old creative spark and learn new skills. Studies have shown that engaging in art activity lowers blood pressure, increases mood, staves off dementia, builds social connections, and increases immune response.  This program really is for anyone and everyone who would like to reap those benefits in a relaxed, low-commitment setting. Admission is free. A donation jar is at the door and any contributions are appreciated. No membership for the YMCA is necessary, just check in at the front desk! About your hostess: Bridget Matros has been an educator for twenty years, in settings ranging from preschools for homeless children to community centers for seniors with dementia. A published advocate for quality creative development in early childhood, Bridget has conducted trainings and created resources for teachers and parents, empowering them to raise critically thinking problem-solvers. She taught art and music in a Montessori school for four years before coming to Waterfall Arts full time as the the Kids & Families Programs Manager. Here she runs camps, family workshops, afterschool programs, and public events. Ms. Matros is also a trained member of Maine Arts’ Commission’s “Creative Aging” teaching artist roster. With a degree in Social Psychology from Oberlin College, her focus with all audiences is to customize experiences to activate the therapeutic and developmental powers of art. Welcome to the most capable and versatile boatyard in northern New England. Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, Maine, is a yacht yard, marina and storage facility on Penobscot Bay with an expansive facility and broad capabilities. We cater to the needs of every type of vessel ranging from small recreational boats to commercial vessels and superyachts. Front Street Shipyard is an expansive, thriving yard with deep-water frontage, state-of-the-art equipment and a forward-thinking workforce. Guided tours run every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer into early fall. There will be a quick overview of some of the projects they have going on, their waterjet cutting machine, and a tour of several of the buildings (with projects inside).   Duration 40-60 minutes. Meet at the corner of Building #5 by the Harborwalk path (big green building after Front Street Pub & Harborwalk Restaurant on the waterfront).

PRINTMAKING OPEN STUDIO (FRIDAY) @ Waterfall Arts Fridays, 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm EST   Start a new project or finish something you have started. Don’t let your lack of studio equipment be an obstacle! Waterfall Arts has well-furnished and staffed facilities for artists of all skill levels to drop in and work independently on their own projects. In addition to providing a workspace and tools, the studios at Waterfall Arts provide a forum for sharing ideas, developing techniques, and experimentation, as well as an opportunity for building community. Artists working in all disciplines are welcome and encouraged to get involved. Drop-in rates are $20 for a 3-hour session. Maximum 5 artists during Open Studios. About the Studio Monitor: MF Morison hails from the west coast where she was primarily known as a metalsmith, apprenticing under Stieg Gusterman (Georgetown, CO) and Thomas Schlicting (Amsterdam). Using acid etch in many processes, she continued to explore this medium, resulting in attending S.F. Art Institute, studying printmaking under the tutelage of Michi Itami. While in SF, MF also worked out of U.C. Berkeley Open Studio and Fort Mason Print Department. Upon her arrival to Midcoast Maine, MF shelved printmaking for a time until she became aware of the Waterfall Arts Printmaking Studio. Since then she has been consistently enthralled and engaged with printmaking, primarily working with copper plate intaglio etching with use of embossment and chine colle. “Warding Off Witches to Protect House and Home” will be the topic of Belfast Historical Society’s meeting on September 22 at 7:00 pm in the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library. Cultural historian Jan Eakins will discuss concealed shoes and other protective devices long used to keep witches and bad luck at bay here in Maine and around the world. We’ll examine shoes from the historical society’s collection, and we’ll learn how to find shoes and witch marks in old buildings around us - and what to do if you find one. If you’ve discovered an old shoe or other object hidden in your house or barn, please bring it or a photo or story to enrich our discussion. The Belfast Historical Society presents talks of local historical interest on the 4th Monday of the month from April through October. All presentations are in the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library and are open to the public. Seating is limited to 75. FMI visit BelfastMuseum.org or call 207 338-9229. Please do your best to register online so we have a contact list in case of cancellation.  The longest running group of its kind in Midcoast Maine, (AND the only group that offers twice-weekly sessions!) our life drawing group at Waterfall Arts began over a decade ago. Anyone who has an interest in drawing from the figure can join this ongoing, long-running, non-instructional group. Join us on Tuesdays for a short pose, non-instructional, gestural group. The format will be variable, starting with quicker poses and ending with a more lengthy pose each session. $15 per session *Looking for a discount and a warm-up drawing session? For many years, the Fourth Friday Art Walk in Belfast has established itself as a summer staple for both residents and tourists alike. Belfast is known by many as an arts destination, and visitors come to our little city to experience our way of life. By showcasing local talent, creativity, and our strong community, the Fourth Friday Art Walk brings both energy and entrepreneurial opportunity to artists and businesses throughout the summer and fall months. The Fourth Friday Art Walk presents artists with a unique way to showcase their work and engage with crowds of new and returning audiences. Open hours in 2025 will be 4pm - 7pm on: May 23, June 27, July 25, August 22, September 26, and October 24. Look for the teal Fourth Friday flags in windows or doors!
