20-to-30-Somethings Book Club is getting revamped and reimagined into something very exciting!  This year, the Massachusetts Center for the Book has released a state-wide reading challenge, and we created this coinciding book group to get you inspired and keep on track with it! Each month, we'll read a book that matches that month's challenge, then gather to talk about our reading experiences.   You don't have to be in your 20s and 30s, and we most likely won't all read the same books; what you choose to read is up to you. Here's the schedule: January: A book published or about the year you were born  February: A book with the name of a city in the title March: A book about someone with a marginalized identity April: A book about books, bookstores, or libraries May: A book with a first sentence of eight words or less June: A book that spans multiple generations July: A book you were drawn to by its cover August: A book with a protagonist who is a teenager or senior citizen September: A book told in non-chronological order October: A book published by a Massachusetts press November: A cookbook or book about food December: Another book by an author you've already read Reach out to us for book recommendations! Join us for a nostalgic look at the History of the Beer Can, along with a unique pop-up museum experience. Curator Kevin Logan will bring an impressive assortment of cans from the museum based in Southeastern Massachusetts, including novelty cans, tv and movie props, and more. In this family-friendly presentation you'll enjoy the history, art, and humor of beer cans with a special focus on local breweries. Trivia and door prizes are included! A Q&A will follow the presentation. Kevin Logan is the Curator of the Beer Can Museum, located in East Taunton, Massachusetts. The museum is a unique collection of thousands of beer cans from more than 80 countries, and includes folk art, vintage cans from the early days of beer can production, classic beer advertising, and novelties. Performing as the duo Sultana, Jon and Li Waterman weave history and original songs to feature a rotating array of real and legendary characters and happenings throughout history. Some of the subjects are the earliest known author, Arthurian legend, the lost ancient libraries of Alexandria and Nalanda, an epic medieval battle and the Old West. The show includes some Massachusetts history as well. The program is the second in the series "Live Music Making History Live." Jon has presented the first show of the series "A Journey Through the Roots of American Popular Music" in libraries and other venues around the country, both in person and virtually. The performances received enthusiastic reviews from those in attendance. The Director of MAGMA in Gloucester, MA, where the program was presented in November of 2019 writes: “A Journey Through the Roots of American Popular Music” by Jon Waterman is a unique performance experience combining music history, storytelling, and original songs inspired by his research. Waterman successfully transforms fascinating tales from history into an evening-length performance that feels personal, contemporary, and politically relevant. A must see for anyone interested in American history or American music!” - Sarah Swifter, Director, MAGMA – Gloucester, MA (November, 2019) Jon and Li Waterman: Musician and songwriter Jon Waterman has been performing his original songs along with blues, rock and country standards throughout his life. His music is influenced by intriguing characters and stories from history, the roots of the music he loves, and the diversity of the human experience. His song “Sultana” which tells the story of the Civil War steamboat disaster was selected to be featured at the Sultana museum in Marion, AR. Waterman has presented his programs “A Journey Through the Roots of American Popular Music” and “Cro-Magnon Blues: History and Legends Through Song” in venues around the country, both in person and virtually. He has an M.A. in Popular Music History from Prescott College. Li is a classically trained guitarist and singer who formerly fronted the Rhode Island band Alien Tesh.
