Tai Chi at the Norwell Public Library Tai chi has been proven through medical studies to benefit the body in many tangible ways. The slow graceful movements help reduce the risk of falling & ease arthritic joint pain. Incorporating mindful breathing & exercise techniques help to bring a sense of calmness to our minds, enhances our focus and develops a greater sense of self-awareness. Ongoing classes will be held on Tuesday mornings from 11:00 am – 12 :00 noon in the NPL’s Meeting Room. Beginners of all ages & abilities are welcome. Wear loose comfortable clothing. The instructor, Maria Sestina is an RN with a holistic health focus. She is a vitalist, believing in the wisdom of the body & our innate ability to maximize our own health. She is a 500-hour certified tai chi/qigong instructor. Maria has also obtained her certification as a “Magical Beginnings/Enchanted Lives” instructor at Deepak Chopra’s Center of Well Being in La Jolla, California. Registration is required. This Library program is funded by the Friends of the Norwell Public Library. Here Comes The Sun Rita S. Berkowitz  Artist Statement: Every morning as the sun rises we are promised a new beginning. A time to rethink who we are and what we would like to achieve in our lives. It represents the Cycle of Life, like a daily reincarnation. Ancient people thought of the sun as the source of life. The Mayan people thought the sunrise brings warmth into consciousness. I am blessed to live in Scituate, Massachusetts, on the marsh and see the most beautiful sunrises to welcome in the day. No matter the weather, the sunrise gives us a feeling that it is all okay and we can go forward to be who we truly want to be. The poem, "Paint Me a Sunrise," by Linda Harrison was read at a loved ones memorial service and from that moment forward I have been embracing the sunrise not only as a memorial to her, but as a meditation to every day. This 60-minute yoga practice offers a gentle mix of Hatha yoga-based styles, including breathwork and meditation to stimulate the energy systems in the body while at that same time bringing calm to the mind. Mindfulness practices based on the 7 attitudes from Jon Kabat-Zinn are woven throughout the class to facilitate the connection of the mind, breath, body, and spirit.  All levels are welcome, with a focus on beginners and advanced beginners.  All you need is an open mind, yoga mat, and a towel or blanket (to roll for support as needed), and water. Special guests Kathleen McEvoy senior policy fellow at The EveryLibrary Institute, a board member at EveryLibrary. Michael Colford, Director of Library Services at Boston Public Library. Short film tbd. Books Unbanned  The Boston Public Library is the third public library in the country to join a growing movement called Books Unbanned. This initiative will give young people ages 13 to 26 across the United States who have felt the impact of book bans free access to the BPL’s digital collections.  The EveryLibrary Institute is a companion organization to EveryLibrary, the first national political action committee for libraries, it's mission of research, training librarians, and programmatic support for libraries is closely aligned with EveryLibrary’s 501(c)4 mission of building voter support for libraries. The EveryLibrary Institute operates exclusively for educational and charitable purposes, including primarily research, writing, publishing and related activities concerning public, academic, and school libraries in the United States for the purpose of public education, strengthening the civic life of communities, bridging social and societal gaps, and for the future of the profession of librarianship. Kathleen McEvoy is a communications expert who has worked with libraries and content/technology providers for more than 20 years. Kathleen has created strategies to address legislation in multiple U.S. states meeting directly with state executives and legislators about book banning, criminalization, and data security. Kathleen is a senior policy fellow at The EveryLibrary Institute, a board member at EveryLibrary, and is a two-term executive board member of the American Library Association’s United for Libraries division. She is the editor of the Seeing the Whole Board Column in Against the Grain and has keynoted on the legislative and policy issues impacting libraries and academia. As the Director of Library Services, Michael Colford is responsible for the public facing service at the BPL, including Neighborhood Services, Youth Services, Reference & Research, Programming, Public Instruction, Literacy Services, Borrower Services, and the Kirstein Business Library & Innovation Center. He has been with the BPL since 2004, and has worked in public libraries since he was a high school page shelving books in the 1970s.
