It spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. It brings together the entire book community —librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restriction in libraries and schools. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books,Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. TeenTober is a new, nationwide celebration hosted by libraries every October and aims to celebrate teens, promote year-round teen services and the innovative ways teen services helps teens learn new skills, and fuel their passions in and outside the library. TeenTober replaces YALSA’s previous Teen Read Week™ and Teen Tech Week™ celebrations, allowing libraries the flexibility to celebrate all types of literacies according to their library’s schedule. Library staff are encouraged to utilize this new celebration to advocate for and raise awareness of the importance of year-round teen services in libraries.

MYSTERY SERIES WEEK Bibliophiles, book nerds, and wanna-be-detectives will snoop around in Mystery Series Week. It’s the first full week in October. Evidence points to the observance being an excellent time to investigate the characters, particularly the detectives, of favorite mystery series. It is a good week to inspect a favorite mystery series to find clues about the quirks of characters, styles of sleuthing and, of course, their strange associates. Why read a series? A single hit-and-run story doesn’t have the nuances of a serial sleuth, a career caper, or a mastermind detective. When the mystery ends, so does the mystery and the trail goes cold. Mystery series continue to baffle. Just when one “who-done-it” is solved, another one is already baffling local authorities, at least until the famous detective enters: Sherlock Holmes, Phillip Marlowe, Hercules Poirot, Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, Trixie Belden, Alex Cross, Miss Marple, Jack Reacher, Virgil Flowers, Harry Bosch, Walt Longmire, Karen Sisco or Jacqueline Jack Daniels.   #mysteryseriesweek
