The Science Center is Certified Sensory Inclusive by KultureCity. The 3/4 mile live animal exhibit trail features coyote, fisher, red fox, bobcat, black bear, mountain lion, river otters, white-tailed deer, various owls and raptors, and more. Plan at least two and a half hours to walk the animal exhibit trail, which meanders through open meadows, mature forests, and marsh boardwalks on a packed gravel path. Children can participate in a craft and enjoy a snack during the  Kick Off Reception! 15TH ANNUAL STORYWALK® AND MONARCH CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECT KICK OFF IN HOLDERNESS   Holderness, NH — The 15th annual StoryWalk®, a cherished collaboration between Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, Holderness Recreation Department, and Holderness Free Library, with support from Meredith Village Savings Bank, is set to begin soon. The kickoff event will take place on June 27 at 10:00 a.m. at the Curry Place Gazebo, located behind the Holderness Post Office.   This year’s featured story is Mr. McGinty’s Monarchs by Linda Vander Heyden, inviting families to enjoy reading and nature while walking the StoryWalk® path.   In conjunction with StoryWalk®, the Science Center, supported by Squam Lakes Conservation Society, will launch a community citizen science project to monitor monarch butterfly larvae on milkweed. Starting June 30, interested participants are invited to join weekly monitoring sessions every Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Pemi-Oxbow Preserve that straddles Holderness, Plymouth & Ashland.   By tracking the presence of monarch eggs and larvae, volunteers will contribute valuable data to the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project, a nationwide initiative to better understand monarch breeding, distribution, and population health. Community involvement is vital to these efforts, helping scientists and conservationists protect monarchs and their habitats for future generations.   Volunteers of all ages are welcome! Meet in the back left corner of the Plymouth State University Ice Arena parking lot at 9:30 on Monday mornings through the end of August. That Motown band has been entertaining the Hamptons crowd for many years now. They do venture out once in a while and have played shows in NYC at The Bitter End, on Broadway at The Town Hall, Center City in Philadelphia, The Inner Harbor in Baltimore., to name a few. Joining the Motown Band is Garfield Fleming. Garfield is a Soul Singing Vocalist of legendary status having been a member of The Delfonics for 25 years with William Hart. Garfield’s obvious resemblance to David Ruffin makes people look twice but when he sings fans get lost in time! He sounds just like Bobby Womack, David Ruffin and can also perform the songs of many legendary artists. In 1981 Garfield released a single “Please Don’t Send Me Away” which is still played all over the world. He gained much of his fame as a solo artist with that song and was received very well in many countries all over the world. Regular hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last trail admission at 3:30 p.m.) For nearly 60 years, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center has been a favorite New England family destination, bringing joy, connection, wonder, and discovery to generations of visitors through live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, guided Squam Lake Cruises and the vibrant charm of Kirkwood Gardens. The Science Center is Certified Sensory Inclusive by KultureCity. The 3/4 mile live animal exhibit trail features coyote, fisher, red fox, bobcat, black bear, mountain lion, river otters, white-tailed deer, various owls and raptors, and more. Plan at least two and a half hours to walk the animal exhibit trail, which meanders through open meadows, mature forests, and marsh boardwalks on a packed gravel path. Trail rates for 2025 are $28 for adults; $26 for seniors (age 65+); $22 for youth (ages 3-15); free for children 2 and under and Science Center members. Veteran wildlife biologist Eric Orff, who has lived a life on the wild side in New Hampshire, will join us to share stories from his book What’s Wild: A Half-Century of Wisdom from the Woods and Rivers of New England. From saving thousands of mother bats from certain death by poison, to riding a ten-point whitetail buck, when the “tranquilized” deer lurched to his feet with Eric astride as it thundered downhill at warp speed in the dark of the night. Holding on for DEER life had a whole other meaning! This will be a night of stories not to be missed! Written during his five-decade career as a wildlife biologist in New Hampshire, the wonderful tales of fish and wildlife featured in Eric’s book represent a lifetime filled with adventures in the Wild. Eric will be signing copies of his book after the presentation. Cost: Free, but space is limited. Advance registration is required.
