Challenge Quilts displayed and voted on! 15 April 2026 ELLEN BLALOCK Art, Artists and Activism: Quilts This lecture gives a brief history of artists that use the quilt medium to produce art quilts that address social, political and current affairs in their community and the world. I discuss the story development of several quilts I produced from two or more quilt series that address violence, racism, identity, trauma and mental illness. The narrative of these quilts show connections to my life as a journalist and documentarian. For quilt groups I cover my journey to adapt quilting techniques to my work. I pick several quilts and explain construction and problem solving with a theme. BIO I am an artist with a mission. I believe my job is to be a conduit to listen and tell the stories of people that need to be heard and represented the ones whose lives and experiences have been marginalized. I am particularly interested in the African American experience in the United States. Through my art I have dealt with issues around African American teen fathers, slavery, female identity and power, LGBTQ families, “Deaf” children, mental illness and trauma, and the ancestors. My job is to listen, to record, to make available the voices and stories of what is missing. The Fathers’ Project, Beyond Boundaries in Ghana, The Quilt Project, Know Me, the WHOLE Me and CAGE have all grown out of my need to help give voices to people and communities that need their stories told. I work in many media. The main ones are photography, video, drawing, and fiber. Some of my projects have been collaborations with other artists for performance art and installation pieces. I have taught courses in art, art history and photography at several colleges and universities. My signature studio course is The Visual Narrative. I have a BFA from Tyler College of Art, Temple University and a MFA from Syracuse University. I am originally from Philadelphia, PA and live in Syracuse, NY. Need I say more?! Join Giucy Giuce as he demonstrates his improv sewing to his foundation paper pieced approach in this BRAND NEW workshop, Controlled Chaos: An FPPers Approach to improv! We’ll draw improvisational elements at random from a bag. You will then learn to draft your own improv-inspired FPP designs based on the mystery element. The motifs will be the same but everyone’s pieces will be uniquely their own! This workshop will be a lively one! We’ll set a timer to work on each element so we can pull enough designs to make a unique project. We’ll cover all sorts of looks and styles. Triangles, flying geese, stripes, wonky shapes. In this workshop we will be making a medallion quilt designed especially for Quilting Mayhem. Not only will we be learning this exciting approach to improv sewing, we will also dive heavily into color and talk about Giuseppe’s favorite tool for choosing fabric: VALUE! BIO I grew up in Long Island, NY. First generation Sicilian-American on my dad’s side and second on my mom’s, my family lived on the bottom floor of my maternal grandparents’ house. My parents were restaurant owners and as such spent much of their time working, so my sister and I were often upstairs with my grandparents.My grandmother is a remarkably talented and prolific seamstress. She taught me to sew in the Sicilian fashion, which is to say she would show me how to do something and I would have approximately 10 seconds to demonstrate that I had learned it perfectly before she’d abruptly pick me up and sew the seam herself. I never much cared for the finicky elements of garment making, so sewing took a backseat for a while. It wasn’t until I was in college that I discovered quilting. I began with sewing improvisational quilts before moving into modern traditional territory. I joined Instagram shortly thereafter and quickly found myself making long distance friends in the ever-growing quilting community via social media.After bouncing around the country for about a decade, I decided to move back to New York to pursue a career in textiles. Within a few months of being in NYC I was offered a marketing position at Andover Fabrics and was promoted to multimedia manager a year later. In 2018, I refocused my energy to fabric design and released my first collection Quantum. In 2021 I released my tenth collection called Nonna, an homage to my beloved grandmother and her home where I learned to sew. Meaning you can choose to eliminate some blades entirely. Make the blades the same size, make them all different, leave spaces. This creates countless variations!
