Hammond Castle Museum’s Spiritualism Tours by Candlelight are an opportunity to explore the history of the Spiritualist movement and the occult side of the Museum’s past and to see one of the North Shore's most iconic historical landmarks in a whole new light. From John Hays Hammond Jr.’s attempts to communicate with supernatural entities using a Faraday Cage to Irene Fenton Hammond’s extensive astrological writings under a mysterious pen name, this 55-minute fully guided specialty tour sets the stage for a fun and informative seasonal experience unlike any other—enhanced by the dramatic, Gothic-inspired architecture of the building and the nighttime atmosphere. Electronic candles will be provided for optional use by visitors for the duration of the Spiritualism Tours by Candlelight. Not recommended for children under 13. LITERARY GLOUCESTER, A WALKING TOUR, began as a project of the Gloucester 400th+ in 2023, and it proved so popular it was picked up by the Gloucester Writers Center in 2024 to keep it going. Now approaching its third year, Phil Storey continues to add rich details to the walks, to be held every second and fourth Saturday morning from May through September 2025, culminating in a Sails & Trails tour on the 27th. Gloucester is known as an endless source of fish tales, but it is also home to a vast literary landscape. T.S. Eliot, often regarded as the most important poet writing in English in the 20th century, summered in Gloucester throughout his childhood. He bought a composition notebook at Proctor Brothers downtown, in which he wrote his early poems, including "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock." Horror writer H.P. Lovecraft set a number of his weird tales in Gloucester such as ?The Shadow Over Innsmouth? featuring the American Legion building on the tour. One of the best-selling American author of the 19th century, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, summered in Gloucester most of her life. Sadly, she is largely forgotten now, as women artists so often are, but in her time she was so popular she attracted other creatives to the area, including Longfellow, whom she brought to Norman?s Woe, a rocky outcropping which inspired ?The Wreck of the Hesperus.? Judith Sargent Murray, Kipling, Charles Olson, and many others are ready to be re-discovered on a free two-hour walking tour of Gloucester with noted raconteur Phil Storey. Philip Storey is a preeminent historian of the local. A noted raconteur and story-teller, he developed this engaging tour over the course of the Gloucester 400+ and is excited to continue hosting it in partnership with the Gloucester Writers Center.

Liz Haywood-Sullivan – Pastel Painting Coastal Drama in Pastel Pastel is a versatile medium that transcends the boundary between drawing and painting. Pastels are created using the same pigments as in every other medium, but they are almost pure pigment, with the least amount of binder. They tend to retain their color and integrity better than other mediums in that the pigments are the least adulterated, and their color is unparalleled. In my demonstration I will begin with an underpainting, where pastel is liquefied and moved around with a brush, to create the basis for a painting of waves and rocks. Using dry pastel on top of the underpainting, I will demonstrate the process of color mixing pastel by lightly layering colors of the same value on top of each other to create an unlimited palette. This technique of perceiving value nuance and being able to translate that to color choice is an important key to working successfully in the medium. Pastel is not fragile or precious. I will show you how responsive and malleable it is, and what fun it can be to create a painting. When working in pastel you can push it around, add layers or other media, wipe it out, and use all sorts of tools to create any number of effects. In my demonstration, I will be painting a portrait of a wave smashing into rocks.

From stick figure doodlers to first-rate talents, join us for a seaside, Plein Air sketch class with Sue Wheeler of Arts Abound in Magnolia. All skill levels are welcome! This two-hour session includes a 30-minute beginner sketch lesson. All you need to bring is a sketchbook, pencils, a ruler and an eraser. Please note: watercolors, pastels, oils, or acrylics are not permitted on the Museum grounds. Attendees who wish to tour the Hammond Castle Museum after this class are entitled to a 20% discount on a self-guided tour. Tour tickets may be purchased in the Museum Shop before 2:30 p.m. on the day of this class. Parking is free. There are many stairs leading from the parking lot down to the Museum. All proceeds from this program will support the restoration of the Hammond Castle Museum.

Hammond Castle Museum’s Spiritualism Tours by Candlelight are an opportunity to explore the history of the Spiritualist movement and the occult side of the Museum’s past and to see one of the North Shore's most iconic historical landmarks in a whole new light. From John Hays Hammond Jr.’s attempts to communicate with supernatural entities using a Faraday Cage to Irene Fenton Hammond’s extensive astrological writings under a mysterious pen name, this 55-minute fully guided specialty tour sets the stage for a fun and informative seasonal experience unlike any other—enhanced by the dramatic, Gothic-inspired architecture of the building and the nighttime atmosphere. Electronic candles will be provided for optional use by visitors for the duration of the Spiritualism Tours by Candlelight. Not recommended for children under 13. Returning this season: Visitors who purchase tickets to the Spiritualism Tours by Candlelight may enjoy additional complimentary access to the Museum's oceanside terrace lawn for a carry-in/carry-out picnic on the date of their reservation. **Picnicking access is available between 5:30 pm and 7:00 pm, and will only be available if the weather permits.** The Museum will not provide any food or beverages, although bottled water is available for purchase in the Museum Shop. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted on the property. Admission: July, August & September: $25. October: $30 Member savings apply.
