Come enjoy a feature film in a brand-new way! As you watch, wait for specific movie moments to be spurred into action! Growl, blow bubbles, eat snacks, ride the waves, and hold on tight! Each child will receive a kit full of movie magic to use during the screening. Our interactive movie nights are best for children ages 5 through 10. If your child is not yet reading independently, you'll need to sit with them to help them read the script and play along. Feel free to bring your own drinks or snacks, as well as anything to make the floor seating feel extra-cozy. Chairs will be available for those who need them. The Water Horse is rated PG and runs for 1 hour 52 minutes. Paws to Read is the ulti-mutt program for animal lovers! Regan and her therapy dogs, Cali and Laddie, will be visiting the library once a month from 4:30 -5:30 PM on a Thursday. And what do her Anatolian Shepherds love more than anything else in the world (except maybe treats)? They adore being read to! Register in advance for a 15-minute session with a furry friend and practice your reading skills in front of a rapt, nonjudgmental audience. This program is for independent readers. Soloist Don Hammontree brings an acoustic rock show to the Garden for an evening of easy listening. He will play a repertoire of covers and originals, including voice-and-guitar versions of tunes by his “other” band, Bad Fogelberg. Raised in blue-collar Peoria, Ill., Don Hammontree - who attended the same elementary and high schools singer Dan Fogelberg had graduated from nearly two decades earlier - started playing keyboards at 13 and guitar at 14. Eventually ending up in Chicago, Hammontree played and wrote songs in a number of bands. Currently a solo artist residing in Massachusetts, Hammontree has gigged all along the East Coast and the American heartland, and has also performed in Poland and Ukraine. He has released three solo CDs. Hammontree is also the guitarist and vocalist for the Cambridge-based band Bad Fogelberg, who released their debut CD in spring of 2017. Bring a blanket or chair, a picnic, and your friends & neighbors! These shows are fun for all ages, and all shows are free and open to all. Best for mobile toddlers, Wiggleworms Storytime features interactive songs, felt board rhymes, bubbles, and books to keep little ones engaged. Join Miss Alyisha every Tuesday at 10:30 AM in Queset Garden. Remember to bring a blanket (or chairs), water, and sunblock! In the case of inclement weather (or super soggy grass), this program will relocate to the Children's Room. No registration required and all families are welcome. The summer Wiggleworms Storytime session runs from Tuesday, June 24 through Tuesday, August 26. The fall session begins on Tuesday, September 16. Teens are invited to register to play this silent tabletop role playing game at the library! From the publisher: "Alice Is Missing is a silent role playing game about the disappearance of Alice Briarwood, a high school junior in the small town of Silent Falls. During the game, players communicate using their phones, sending text messages to each other as they unearth clues about what happened to Alice.  With a full-length, licensed soundtrack and a structured narrative that unravels solely at the hands of thee players, Alice Is Missing is an immersive experience designed to be played in one session and without the need for a gamemaster." This game was created by Spenser Starke and is intended for 3 to 5 players ages 16+. It is a work of fiction, but "inherently deals with topics of lack of agency, death, grief, helplessness, loss, tense family dynamics, and violence. Player discretion is advised." If 14 or 15 year old teens are interested in playing, we require their parents or guardians to sign an acknowledgement form. More information about the game can be found on the official website. The Ames Free Library will be offering 3 individual dates over the course of the summer for teens to register and play this single-session role playing game. Rather than requiring teens to share phone numbers, we will play on a librarian-moderated Discord server that will be closed after the game.
